French - English Dictionary
/ʒə/
Je is the first-person singular subject pronoun in French, equivalent to 'I' in English. It is used as the subject of a verb to indicate that the speaker is performing an action.
| # | Type | French | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | pronoun | je personal pronoun | I |
| 2 | pronoun | je | I |
Je suis heureux.
I am happy.
Je vais à l'école.
I am going to school.
Je ne sais pas.
I don't know.
Je is always the subject of a verb and comes before it. Before a vowel or silent h, it shortens to j' (for example: j'aime, j'habite). Remember that French requires the subject pronoun where English sometimes omits it: 'Je vais' must include je, not just 'vais'.
