As a relative pronoun, que is always used in Spanish, even when it could be omitted in English ("the book I bought" vs "the book that I bought"). When que introduces a noun clause after verbs like creer, decir, or pensar, it corresponds to the German conjunction dass. Que as a relative pronoun can refer to persons or things without changing form, while German requires different articles or welcher depending on gender and case.
