لا functions as both a particle (answering yes/no questions) and as a negation marker within sentences. When used as a particle alone, nein is most formal; nee and nö are colloquial German equivalents. Learners often confuse لا with ليس; remember that لا is more general negation, while ليس specifically negates copular sentences.
