De is essential for expressing possession in Spanish (mi casa de mi hermano = la maison de mon frère), unlike English which uses the possessive 's. When de appears before el, it contracts to del (de + el = del). Remember that de can mean about/concerning in contexts where French prefers sur, au sujet de, or à propos de.
