Ama is the most common Turkish conjunction for expressing contrast. It is neutral in register and works in both written and spoken Turkish. Do not confuse it with "fakat" (also "but"), which is slightly more formal. Ama appears immediately after the contrasting element and connects independent or dependent clauses.
