ты is the informal, familiar form used with friends, family, children, and peers. In formal or respectful contexts, Russian uses вы (the plural or formal you). Do not confuse ты with вы; using ты with strangers or superiors is considered rude. Note that Russian distinguishes this grammatically; Arabic does not always make the same formal/informal distinction as prominently.
