Russian - German Dictionary
[nʲɪ]
не is the primary Russian negation particle, translated as nicht in German. It negates verbs, adjectives, nouns and other words, and can also mean verboten (forbidden) in imperative contexts.
| # | Type | Russian | German |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | determiner | не used to show an activity is forbidden | verboten |
| 2 | adverb | не negates meaning of another word | nicht |
| 3 | conjunction | не And not | nicht |
Я не знаю, где он живёт.
Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt.
Это не интересно.
Das ist nicht interessant.
Не входить!
Nicht eintreten! / Eintritt verboten!
не is unstressed and always precedes the word it negates. In imperative sentences (commands), не + verb often conveys a prohibition equivalent to German verboten. Do not confuse не with ни, which is used in different contexts such as double negatives and indefinite pronouns.
